The funeral of Mrs. Mary Ann Hancock, proprietress of the old Higham Ferrers Coffee Tavern, who died on March 21, aged 85, took place on Saturday. At the service in the Parish Church of St. Mary’s the Rev. T. Crowther-Green, Vicar of Chelveston, referred to Mrs. Hancock’s fifty years’ work as a Sunday School teacher at the Parish Church School. Mrs. Hancock’s favourite hymn, “How sweet the name of Jesus” was sung. Mr. Crowther-Green also officiated at the graveside.
The family mourners were Mr. W. Miller and Miss E. Miller (brother and sister), Mrs. W. Wood and Mrs. F. Pentelow (nieces), Mrs. W. Ball, Easton (niece) and Mr. Ball, Mrs. F. Shelton, Mrs. T. Asbery and Mrs. S. Miller (nieces).
Mr. S. Miller, Mr. T. Hancock and Mrs. C. Lane were unable to be present.
Among the wreaths was one from the Vicar of St. Mary’s (the Rev. P. Kirk) and past and present Sunday School teachers.
