Melville's Directory 1861
Raunds

Raunds is an extensive village and parish, in the hundred of Higham Ferrers, and diocese of Peterborough, and distant 6 miles from Thrapston. The population in 1851 was 1,873, and the parish contains about 4,300 acres of land, the principle part of which is arable; soil, clay, gravel, and sand. The Church is very commodious, with a spire steeple, and in the early style of English architecture. The living is a vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Charles Porter. There are places of worship for Baptists and Wesleyans; also a National school for boys and girls. The only object of interest is an ancient cross in the churchyard. It is noted for the manufactory of shoes; the most extensive factory is that of Mr. William Nichols.

Post Office—Thomas Storey, postmaster.
Letters arrive at 8.45a.m.; dispatched at 4.10p.m., and are received through Thrapston.
