Irchester is a village and parish in the hundred of Higham Ferrers, and diocese of Peterborough, distant 3 miles south from Higham Ferrres, and 2 miles east from Wellingborough. Knuston Hall is also situate one mile north-east from the village, and is the handsome, square mansion, standing on an elevated spot, in the centre of a well-wooded park, overlooking the surrounding country; on the south of the mansion a stream of water crosses the park, and enlivens the scene by breaking over a rocky fall, and crossed by a light bridge of elegant structure. The population in 1851 was 960, and the parish contains about 2,658 acres of land. The Church, dedicated to St. Catherine, is a fine specimen of Early English architecture, in the decorated style; the steeple is of stone, having a lofty octagonal spire, the tower being adorned with a clock, and contains five bells; the pulpit and reading desk are of very fine carved oak, of exquisite workmanship, and in good preservation. The living is a discharged vicarage, united with that of Wollaston. There is a place of worship for Wesleyans; also a small free school.
Post Office—Daniel Ward, postmaster.
