Rushden Echo, 14th April 1916, transcribed by Kay Collins
Accident & Fire

Accident—Mr. John Matson, 63, employed by Mr. Wm. Pettit, Farmer, fell off a load of straw on Friday last, injuring his ribs and shoulder. A rope had been thrown over the straw, and Matson thought it had been fastened, and was sliding down when he fell heavily to the ground.

A Fire occurred on Sunday at a house in Newtown Row, occupied by Mrs. Mary Ann Matson, aged 84, mother of the above injured man. She struck a match which set fire to the bed. Her grandson, asleep in the adjoining room, heard her shout and the fire was soon put out.
