Firemen find £1,000
Coins in derelict cottage

RUSHDEN firemen fighting a blaze at a derelict cottage at Wymington found a "treasure trove" of early 18th century coins, believed to be worth about £1,000, hidden in the rafters.

The coins are being held by Bedfordshire Police who are arranging for a further check on the value.

The find is being reported today to the North Bedfordshire Coroner, Dr. Max Lucas, who may hold an inquest.

The hoard was found in the roof void by a member of Northamptonshire Fire Brigade based at Rushden. The coins were in a rotting canvas bag in the rafters.

The cottage stands in an isolated position in Church Lane. It is derelict after being empty for about 20 years.

The last occupant, said the rector of Wymington, the Rev. W. H. Fluellen, today, was a member of the Desborough family who had lived in the village for generations. He was an old man who lived alone.

Was it this cottage?
