Great Fire at Chelveston
Stacks and Farm Buildings Burnt
A serious fire occurred at Chelveston on Saturday, on the farm premises of Mr. Jabez Browning, damage being done to the value of from £1,000 to £1,500. The fire broke out at about half-past ten on Saturday morning, and it is supposed that it originated by a spark dropping from an engine which was busy thrashing in the yard. The stacks all over the yard were soon ablaze, and despite the efforts of the people who flocked on the scene, the fire made way rapidly. The fire brigades of Rushden, Irthlingborough, and Higham Ferrers, were sent for, but on their arrival their efforts were considerably retarded by the distance from which water had to be obtained. Notwithstanding all the work of the above-named brigades, and later on of Wellingborough also, nine stacks were destroyed, viz., two hay, three wheat, one clover, two straw, and one of draggings. A long row of hovels, barns, and outbuildings, were also completely spoilt, and the damage is estimated, as stated above, at from £1,000 to £1,500. The ricks were insured in the Royal Exchange (Mr.Tusting, Newton Bromswold), and the buildings in the County, with Mr. J. T. Parker, of Wellingborough.
