Established by Mr. J. Kingsmith, in 1875, the present works were erected in 1881, and the currying department added in 1887. A new wing was erected in 1902. In 1904 for purely family reasons, it was converted into a limited company, with Mr. Kingsmith as managing director.

Mr. J. R. Kingsmith, jun., after two-years’ course at Yorkshire College, came into the business.

The firm of Kingsmith and Son have done business with all government departments, and have been contractors to H.M. for many years. A large trade is also done with foreign companies.

Latterly the firm have added to their Government and general trade, and find the two branches work exceedingly well together. Personal supervision in all departments accounts for this, and keeps everything working with the [smooth]ness. The firm tan and curry their own leather, and the whole [leather] department entirely devoted to this business. Buying [hides in] the rough, they are retanned, whitened, and shaved by .... All the different processes are most scientifically controlled and the factory is replete with all the best machinery for the business.

Mr. Kingsmith is a Justice of the Peace and a member of Northamptonshire County Council. He takes a keen interest in all matters affecting the welfare of the county, and is diligent in pursuance of his public functions. He is a member of the .....ison Committee, the Lunacy Committee, and is on the reformatory Council. For twelve years he has served his [parish on] the County Council, and, besides the above, is an active on the Finance, Licensing, and Education Committees. Mr. Kingsmith farms 80 acres of land, and is thoroughly .... and genuine in all he undertakes.
