Brown & Stokes Bros. Ltd.

Brown & Stokes began trading in 1946.

Directors of the company were Clifford (Cliff) Brown, Reginald (Reg) Stokes and Philip (Phil) Stokes. Reg and Phil were brothers and were Cliff's cousins. Reg was a carpenter by trade and managed all aspects of the carpentery work. Phil was a plumber by trade and managed all aspects of the plumbing work. Cliff was MD and managed the business, and his wife, Marie was company secretary.

Initially their main office was in Brown’s farmhouse in College Street, Higham Ferrers, moving in 1948 to the bottom of Wharf Road. The works and builder’s yard were located in Kings Meadow Lane.

The work undertaken was varied, including the building of council houses, private houses, agricultural buildings, schools, church halls etc. They built several of the council housing estates in Higham Ferrers and Rushden, and the Higham sports pavilion and part of the infant school.

The company ceased trading in 1980.
