Rushden Echo, 24th January 1908, transcribed by Kay Collins
Valentine’s Improved Fire Protector
A New Invention—The people of Rushden, Higham Ferrers, and indeed of the whole of the country will be interested to learn of a new invention for the prevention of accidents by burning, which has been designed, and fully patented by Mr. Sydney A. Valentine, of Kimbolton Road, Higham Ferrers.

The invention consists of an improved fireguard, and it is to be known by the name of “Valentine’s Improved Fire Protector” for domestic fireplaces. This fireguard (if adopted) will prevent the possibility of children falling over into the fire, as it covers the whole space hitherto left open, and is so arranged that no inconvenience need arise when cooking or when the fire needs attention. The apparatus consists essentially of a number of bars or rods of iron or galvanised wire connected to each other by short lengths of chain, so that when not in use, the “Protector” may be either pushed up to the mantle shelf out of the way, or, as in another method covered by the same patent, drawn to each side of the fireplace. The rods are arranged either vertically or horizontally, and convenient in either form, and when in use the “Protector” ensues complete safety to the children. Seeing the interest that is manifest in the country toward the protection of child life desirability for such an invention is evident, especially when reading the reports of coroner’s inquests concerning burning fatalities. Recently the coroner for St. Pancras said that in England and Wales there were 1600 children burned to death annually. Then again, a Bill is expected shortly to be introduced in Parliament, making it a case of neglect against parents in not providing proper fireguards. Anything calculated to relieve suffering is always welcome, and it is hoped the Valentine Improved Fire Protector will receive the best attention of the people in their desire to save many premature deaths of children by burning. The London agents for the patent are Messrs. Crozier and Co. Ltd., patent experts and consulting engineers, 110, 111 Strand, W.C.
