Irchester Solar Power

We keep getting informed about renewable energy by the powers that be, and we must all try to do our bit for the planet.

Renewable energy resources exist over wide geographical areas, in contrast to fossil fuels.

Many nations around the world already have renewable energy contributing more than 20% of their total energy supply, with some exceeding over half of their power needs in this way.

Renewable energy is energy from renewable resources that are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such as wind, sunlight, geothermal heat, and water movement.

So where does this fit in with our area? Well anyone driving between Irchester and Wellingborough, via Little Irchester, has no doubt seen thousands of solar panels that sprang up during 2023 and 2024.

The site will finally have between 40% and 60% ground coverage, with the wild grasslands being managed by sheep grazing.

It covers an area of 25 hectares, and is covered by photovoltic (PV) panels to generate electricity for as many as 7000 households in the local area.

It is understood that energy firms pay around £1000 per acre to landowners, and are aiming for a lease period of some forty years.
