In looking back on the past year we find the greatest event, because the most useful and lasting, was the laying on of a public water supply, bringing in its train improved sanitation, though there is urgent need to go still further. Overcrowded, dilapidated, and insanitary cottages need urgent attention more than in the past.
The election of Guardians led to the Labour candidate, Mr. J. C. Turner, being placed at the head of the poll, with Mr. E. Parsons, J P., second. In the Parish Council we have three fresh members. An endeavour was made to run the election on party lines, but it made very little difference in the result.
In connection with the water supply the Water Committee of the Council have done useful work, for which they deserve the credit due.
The Hospital Committee have done a good work, and given their services ungrudgingly. Their efforts have been on the whole successful, although it is a matter of regret that the call upon them for letters has been a very heavy one, so heavy as at times to tax their resources. One of the young workers in the cause is, we regret to say, an inmate of the hospital at the present time. We refer to Miss Gladys Lilley, whose annual children's concert in aid of charitable work has in the past been appreciated. We wish her a speedy recovery.
The school question has been an acute one, and one in which feeling has at times run high.
