Lest we Forget - Hargrave’s Memorial to her Fallen Sons

The Memorial Cross
The Memorial Cross
There was a large gathering of parishioners and visitors at Hargrave on Friday afternoon to witness the unveiling of the chaste Memorial Cross erected to the memory of the ten men of Hargrave who fell in the Great War. The granite cross bears the following inscription.

1914-1919

Let those who come after see to this that these names be not forgotten.

A.E. Abbott

J.M. Boultbee

A.E. Boultbee

E.W. Coles

E.G. Hills

K.B. Murchison

R.F. Newton

G.F. Nicholson

H.W. Nicholson

J.W. Yorke

The impressive service in the church was conducted by the Rector (the Rev. F.C. Boultbee), the Rev. Joseph Wells, superintendent minister of the Raunds Wesleyan Church Circuit, reading the lessons.

The clergy and congregation then proceeded to the memorial outside, where two returned soldiers pulled the cords attached to the Union Jack and unveiled the cross, which was then dedicated by the Rev. C.C. Aldred, formerly vicar of Raunds, and now at Abington, Northampton, who afterwards gave a brief address.

The singing was led by the newly-formed choir. The “Last Post” sounded by the Brothers Hodson and the Raunds Church Lads Brigade, and the Benediction pronounced by the Rector, brought a memorable and impressive ceremony to a close.
