TECHNICAL EDUCATION SUCCESSES AT
RUSHDEN AND HIGHAM FERRERS.

A Convivial Gathering.

To celebrate the gratifying successes achieved in Technical Education in Boot and Shoe Manufacture imparted at Higham Ferrers and Rushden, a complimentary supper given to the successful students on Tuesday evening at the Green Dragon Hotel. An excellent  spread  was upon the tables by the worthy. Host and Hostess, Mr and Mrs J Affleck. The chair was taken by Mr W Hirst Simpson, C.C., and there were present the Mayor of the Borough (Alderman C Parker), Chairman of the Committee; Councillors T Sanders, C Jolley, S Pack, P M Smith (Master of the Grammar School), C W Perkins, Messrs Owen Parker, Hon. Sec. (members of the Local Committee), F Knight, J Claridge (Local Examiners), E Swaysland, Northampton, Instructor; J E Welch, J Adams, C W Horrell, J Bates, G Allen, J T Glover, C Green, G Hustwaite, G Horne, J. Spencer, W Tassell, J B White (students), F Brazier, &c.—Alderman E B Randall (ex-Mayor) occupied the vice-chair.—A letter of apology was received from Mr G Denton. C.C.—At the conclusion of the repast the Chairman gave the loyal toasts, which were duly honoured.—Councillor W H Simpson, who is a member of the Educational Committee, addressed the gathering on the results which. were of a most favourable and sheering character to the county generally, and that Centre in particular, mentioning the results of the examinations, which have already appeared in our columns.

Reviewing the working of the Technical Education Act, he said that it was a source of great anxiety and of no little labour to the Educational Committee of the County Council and their Organising Secretary. He was afraid the future of technical education would never be thoroughly satisfactory until they were able to got hold of the young.  The establishment of scholarships, he thought, would also be of great advantage in that direction. (Applause.)—The certificates and prizes were then distributed by the  Chairman ……………[the results must have been in an earlier edition of the Rushden Times?]
