The Recreation Ground in Saffron Road, is between the schools and the cemetery. There was a piece of rough ground with part of an old moat with trees, next to the bowling green.

At the Wharf Road end there were some hardcourts for tennis, and at the Saffron Road side the play equipment for small children included swings, slide and roundabout.

In the 1960s there was a bowling green, tennis courts, and football pitch with this stand for spectators. Teenagers, many from the Higham Road/Tollbar estate, would often spend their evenings playing cards inside the stand.
