Market Square

c1894
Market Square c1894

The Market Place was where people assembled for the market to sell and buy goods, to mark special occasions, for town events, or for proclamations such as the death of a monarch.

It was also for public whippings, seeing people in the stocks, and for hiring labour.

After metal supports were installed around the cross, young men would often climb up to get a better view at some of the events.

The hunt also assembled here before setting off.
