Jowitt's Higham Ferrers Directory 1906
History and Introduction

HIGHAM FERRERS is situated on an eminence, overlooking the valley of the river Nene, ten miles south-east from Kettering, five miles east from Wellingborough, sixteen miles north-east from Northampton, sixty-five miles from London, and practically joins Rushden on the south. There is a station of the Midland Railway Company, terminating the branch line from Wellingborough, and a station on the L. and N.W. line from Northampton to Peterborough, one-and-a-half miles from the centre of the town. The town is named "Higham" in Domesday Book, the latter part of the name coming from the Earls Ferrers, who were lords of the manor. Roman pottery and remains have been found in the parish. It was formerly a Borough by prescription, prior to the time of King John, but the earliest extant Charter is that of 2 and 3 Philip and Mary (1555-6), which was confirmed in 36 Charles II. (1684-5). The Corporation was dissolved under the "Municipal Corporations Act," 1883, and the Borough received a new Charter in June, 1887. The Borough sent one Member to Parliament till the Reform Act of 1832. Its growth was hampered by the difficulty of obtaining building land, but of recent years this difficulty has been removed, and several shoe factories have been built, the latest being the large up-to-date factory built near the Midland Railway by Messrs. Charles Parker & Co. to replace the one destroyed by fire on September 21st, 1905. The Area of the parish comprises 1,931 acres of land and 14 acres of water, and the Rateable Value is £8,258 93. 6d. The Census of 1901 gave 2,540 inhabitants, as against 1,810 in 1891, and at the present time they are estimated at 2,750. The Burgess Roll contains 554 names. Two miles six-and-a-half furlongs of main roads are maintained by the Borough Council. Higham has its own monthly Petty Sessions, held in the Town Hall, at 11 o'clock, on the second Monday in each month, and gives its name to the Hundred and the Rural Deanery. It is one of the parishes of the Wellingborough Union for Poor Law purposes, and is in the County Court District of Wellingborough.
