The Early Years

Wellingborough News, 30th September 1882, transcribed by Kay Collins

FOOTBALL CLUB — At a recent meeting of the Club it was resolved to make an effort to procure the use of a field at the back of the Church for practice, as it was thought that that ground being more convenient would add to the proficiency of the club, and induce more to join it.

The following were appointed officers:— Captain, W. Evans; vice-captain, T. Draper; secretary, R. Evans; treasurer, T. Parker; committee, C. Bates, W. Miller, C. Pinnitt, C. Horrell, and A. Wagstaff.

FOOTBALL - HIGHAM FERRERS v. WELLINGBOROUGH CLUBS
On Saturday last a match was played between the above Clubs, on the Recreation Ground Higham (association rules). The Higham captain won the toss, and chose to kick down hill. The ball was kicked off by the Wellingborough captain, and after about ten minutes’ play the home team obtained a goal. Two more goals were obtained before half-time was called. Play being resumed, the visitors made great efforts, but were unsuccessful in scoring, and just before time was called a goal was kicked by the Higham captain. The home team thus won by four goals to nil.

Football - HIGHAM FERRERS v. WELLINGBOROUGH REVELLERS— The draw for the second round for the Counties' Challenge Cup, between these clubs, was played on the Recreation-ground at Higham Ferrers on Saturday last. The Higham captain won the toss and elected to play down hill, with wind and sun in his favour. The play was commenced at a rattling pace, and the ball was soon pushed towards the visitors' goal post, and although several byes were kicked neither team scored. The ball was then got into the centre again, but the home team soon passed the posts of their opponents again. This was repeated several times, and appeals to the referee were frequent. Just before half-time—at which time neither had scored at all—it was thought the chances were in favour of the home players. Upon play being resumed, however, the ball, after being taken to the Wellingborough ground, was very rapidly returned, and from a long kick a goal was scored for the visitors. Some sharp play ensued, and another goal was claimed by the visitors but upon appeal it was decided that the ball was played after it had been past the post of the Higham players, so that the second goal was disallowed by the referee. Play proceeded with varying success, and twelve minutes before time the ball was burst, and there not being another on the ground a rest was had until one was fetched, after which play was resumed faster than aver. The visitors obtained a corner kick, but did not improve on it, and the match, which had been a very evenly contested one, ended in favour of the Revellers by one goal to nil. The following were the players:—Wellingborough: goal, E. Kemshead; backs, C. Deiton, F. Ingram, and A. Thompson; forwards, F. Coales, G. Mason, W. Sisman, A. Bounds, F. Ingram, A, Owen, and W. Foscutt; F. Silk umpire. Higham Ferrers:— Goal, G. Carwell; backs, E. Wilmott, C. Bates; half-backs, R. Evans, C. Draper; forwards, C. Horrell, T. Draper, T. Parker, A. Lawrence, W. Miller, W. Evans.

Interesting recollections of the Higham Ferrers Football Team win the prize of five shillings for Mr Albert (Billy) Burditt, 27 Thrift St, Higham Ferrers, who writes:

I well remember the photo – it was Higham Ferrers Football Team about 1885 or 1886.

Miller played in goal; he was one of the smallest but one of the best, and played for the County several times. Mayes and Wilmer played back. At one time they used to play only two half-backs, and these were Bates and Richardson. The forwards were C W Horrell, J Jeyes, T Draper (captain), A Blundell, A. Colton and T. Parker.

This team used to be one of the best in the county at that time, as they played Wellingborough Grammar School, which was an honour at that time, because Wellingborough used to take a scorekeeper to tick the goals down. Higham only played them twice, beating them once and drawing once.

Another correspondent mentions that Tom Mayes once kicked the ball out of the Green-lane ground at Kettering over two rows of houses.

A benefit collection for Mr C Richardson, who up to early December of last year regularly turned out at left-half for Higham Ferrers, and who had to give up owing to knee injuries sustained whilst playing against Rothwell at Rothwell, was taken at the Higham Ferrers v Peterborough Reserves match in the Northants League on Saturday, and amounted to £1. 16s. 6d.
