Cash boost will ring our bells

The community of Higham Ferrers is celebrating the news that it has received a £29,000 funding boost from SITA Trust to enable the restoration of the bells in St Mary’s Church.

After four years of fundraising, generating just over £55,000, there was still a substantial shortfall to find to pay to rehang the bells on a new, modern framework and cast two new bells to make a ring of 10.

The ringing of the bells has become increasingly difficult over the past 12 months, with running repairs in the belfry a constant battle.  The small band of volunteer ringers had become increasingly despondent in ever realising the large amount of funds needed to get the job done.

A delighted Bob Dennis, who is the tower captain and who is liaising with Taylors Bell Foundry, said: “It is the final piece of the jigsaw, and has allowed us to give Taylors the formal go ahead and pay the deposit.”

Marek Gordon, chief executive and chairman of SITA Trust, added: “We are delighted to have been able to support this project through the Landfill Communities Fund.

“This important source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided such worthy projects with more than £1.2 billion.”
