Rushden Echo, 4th June 1909, transcribed by Kay Collins
St. James’s Chapel and Hospital

Interesting Discovery—Two ancient mullioned windows were found on Monday last during the demolition of the old farm house, which adjoins the Wesleyan Church. One was found at the front and the other at the back of the building, and both were completely covered, having been built into the walls, this probably accounting for their excellent preservation. In view of this discovery it is thought that this is probably the site of the St. James’s Chapel and Hospital presented to the borough by Martin Swan, the King’s Scholar, on April 11th, 1486, according to the history of Higham Ferrers. History also says that there was a hospital at Higham Ferrers long before Chichele College, dedicated to St. James A.D. 1258. It is interesting to note that both are called St. James’s Chapel or Hospital, and these newly discovered windows are probably part of the original building.
