Wymington Village

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS - Especially valuable was the help given by the oldest lady in the parish in 1970, Mrs. Clara Wooding, aged ninety-five. We are indebted to her for much of the information regarding the old village as her clear and lively memory extends back to when she started school in 1879. The majority of the text was written by Stella Reynolds in 1970.

THESE villagers shared their memories of the century at a meeting held to collect local artefacts.

Members of Wymington Millennium Festival Committee organised the meeting in the memorial hall on Wednesday to collect photographs and slides for a book on the village's history.

The committee hopes to publish a book about Wymington next year, and an exhibition of the memorabilia will be held on the 1st January, 2000.

Committee member Anne Brown said: "The meeting was held to collect photographs and details about Wymington in the last century. We had about 30 people from Wymington and Rushden come with photographs and slides, some of which go back to the 1920s and 1930s. Our job now is to see which ones are appropriate. We hope to get the book out next year."

The committee is still looking for items.

The Fire Brigade

Mr. Goosey wanted to be Captain of the Fire Brigade and to be responsible for apparatus and to enrol members.

No fire engine was bought for Wymington but both Rushden and Wellingborough were approached about the use of theirs. It was later decided that the steam fire engine at Wellingborough was too far away to be of any real use.

The Wymington brigade was inactive for many years and was disbanded in 1944.
