HMI examined the children. HMI’s report: The School is in a very insufficient state. The Infants are fairly well taught but the older children almost all fail in Dictation and Arithmetic. English is a failure. Needlework unsatisfactory. One tenth has been deducted from the grant under Article 115 (I) in consequence of the unsatisfactory report of HM Inspector. Filled forms from SAO for children who will be half time after the holidays. Report of Secular Examination: The school has been brought into a proper state of organisation and ought to go on well. Credit to Miss Tyrer. My Lords have awarded the Excellent Merit Grade Good. English took the full grant in the upper dept. and needlework in the infants. The girls only took English as a special and not needlework. J M Tyrer resigned.

HMI’s report for 1891. The school is nicely conducted and elementary subjects fairly well taught. The babies should have some varied occupations. The school is not properly ventilated and the lower parts of the walls should be painted or wainscotted.

HMI’s report: Lighting and ventilation improved by the opening out of the two high windows. Bad smell in the girls’ offices and the urinal in the boys would be better outside the building. The gallery might be improved with backs to seats fitted with little desks. More slates required.

HMI’s report: Habits of punctuality and personal neatness should receive attention. Re-colouring of the walls and more liberal decoration with pictures and maps would help. Old desks should be replaced by modern type. Infants. The number exceeds the accommodation allowed and as the population is increasing an enlargement of the room will soon be imperative. The offices should be cleaned more frequently. Grant £48.18.6.

They are the worst behaved and most untidy children I have ever had to teach. I feel quite discouraged.

Feb 24

Discipline is dreadful. I never met with such ignorance in behaviour, they think nothing of blankly refusing and if brought out and set in the middle of the room make sport for the whole of the room. I cannot stand it much longer. Loving the work as I do it is the delight of my life when they behave something decently even. 

HMI’s report: The school must be declared inefficient (Art 36 of the code). Very little work in exercise books. A musical instrument is needed for drill. The walls are damp. There should be a gap between the back wall of the school and the earth in the churchyard. There is no proper apex ventilation and part of the school is dark. The girls should enter their playground from the school and the gate between the two playgrounds should be kept locked. The girls’ offices are to be reconstructed and removed further from the school. The playground needs a coating of gravel. Infants declared inefficient. Plans for enlarging this room have been submitted. This work should be done without delay. School declared inefficient. Formal warning that the grant may be withheld. The present staff is insufficient to entitle the grant. F Hill is not approved under Art 68.

Miss Leighton, Standard I and II absented for 45 minutes without permission to go to the Rectory. She is most dictatorial and fails to enforce obedience, upsetting the discipline of the school. I hope Rev Drew will release me this weekend.

Miss Leighton was exceedingly rude to me in the presence of the children, therefore instead of releasing me the Rector dismissed her paying one month salary in advance in lieu of notice. The Rector assisted. No other help can be obtained though every effort is made.

HMI’s Report. The room is crowded and inconvenient. It is only 16 feet wide and the long desks are arranged four deep. There is no fireguard. The cupboard accommodation is inadequate. The number in attendance exceeds that for which the staff is sufficient. An additional desk is required. No grant payable under Article 105. HMI reports that the infant class is habitually too large. I am to request the long desks in the Mixed school will be placed 3 rows deep only and that the additional desk for infants will be provided.

Mrs M H Jones retired after 28 years. Mr Summers, new Head.

Water tap and waste pipe frozen. Only 1 WC open.

Mr Mawson HMI inspected frozen WCs. 

Jan 24

All WCs frozen. Closed the school.

Reopened school.

All water and WCs frozen.

A plug for water heater installed.

An electric copper has been installed.
