Newton Bromswold Soldier Killed in France
Newton Bromswold people learned that local soldier, Gdsm. Robert Edward (Ted) Lines, aged 34, of a Grenadier Guards armoured battalion, has been killed in action in France.
Gdsm. Lines was the younger son of Mr. Robert Lines, and the late Mrs. Lines, and just over a year ago married Miss Bessie Sinfield of Avenue-road, Court Estate. Up to joining his regiment on Sept. 1st. 1939, he was in the employ of Mr. Robert Marriot, builder and contractor, of Rushden, and three weeks after D-Day he landed in Normandy.
A padre says in a letter to the widow: "Your husband, as a true Guardsman, was killed at his post. His squadron and a company of Grenadier Infantry took part in a very gallant action against superior numbers and succeeded in defeating a whole battalion, 130 being taken prisoner."
During Evensong at Newton Bromswold Parish Church on Sunday the Rev. A. Ayton Williams paid tribute to the memory of Gdsm. Lines, mentioning that he had been a scholar of the Day and Sunday Schools, a sidesman of the church and a member of the village Cricket Club. Special hymns were sung and before Mrs. Mills, the organist played "O Rest in the Lord," the congregation stood for a moment in silence.
