OF USEFUL & ORNAMENTAL WORK

ON THURSDAY & FRIDAY, AUG. 2nd & 3rd,
For the purpose of raising funds for the
Completion of the Restoration of the Parish Church.
REFRESHMENTS will be provided, and a BAND will attend.
Admission—First day, from 2 to 5, 1s.; after 5, 6d.
Second day, from 2 to 5, 6d.; after 5, 3d. Children Half-price.

PRESENTATION—On Easter Day a cross and vases were presented to the church of St. Peter's, in this parish, by the children of the Rector and Miss Taylor. The cross, of wrought brass, a Calvary, very good and suitable to this little church, was the gift of Miss Taylor. The vases, also of brass, and fitted with frames, and present a very handsome appearance, when filled with flowers in designs. It is hoped further to enhance the value of these presentations by the erection of a reredos, which is especially required to show to the beauty of the cross.

The Church Choir, through the kind efforts of Miss Taylor, had a pleasant outing on Monday, when they went to Hunstanton, joining the train at Higham Ferrers in the morning and alighting at Rushden at night. Out of a total population of 84, no fewer than 29 went by the trip.

The Roll of Honour which has been presented to the parish by Mr. Harris, as mentioned in last week’s “Rushden Echo” was formally dedicated on Sunday evening by the Rev. W. McCleary. A good number of people were present, including many Yelden residents.

The Vicar (Rev. W. H. McCleery), besides having charge of the parishes of Newton Bromshold and Shelton, is doing national service on a farm during the greater part of the week.

The Names of 22 parishioners of Newton Bromshold have been enrolled as members of the Rushden branch of the League of Nations Union, and practically every house in the village is represented in this number. The Newton members have promised to take part in the coming Peace Pageant at Rushden, and will probably have a decorated lorry to represent the “Peace and Plenty” which is the underlying aim of the League of Nations.
A Petition, containing the names of 171 people interested, has been sent to the Bishop asking that the Rushden Court Estate should be ‘included in the parish of Newton Bromshold.’ It is suggested that the Rev. W. H. McCleery should reside in the district, and that the living of Shelton, which he also holds, should be amalgamated with some adjacent parish.

Newton Bromshold - Parish Divisions—By Order in Council the recommendation of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners that the benefice of Chelveston-cum-Caldecott be separated from the Higham Ferrers parish and attached to Newton Bromshold will become operative in the middle of April (just before Easter), and the Rector of Newton (Rev W H McCleery) will have charge of the new enlarged parish, conducting services in both churches.

In his younger days a vocalist of considerable merit and winner of many prizes, he was a descendant of an old violinist family, hence the affectionate name of “Fiddler” Bollard. His grandfather used to be a violinist in Newton Bromshold Church.

Altar Gift to Newton Church - Mrs Cooper’s Work in memory of Children
A beautiful violet altar frontal, for use during Lent and Advent, has been made by Mrs Ada Cooper, of the Court Estate, and presented by her to Newton Bromshold Church.
This handsome gift was dedicated by the Vicar, the Rev W R Taylor, at the Holy Communion service on Sunday morning recently.
This gift has been made by Mrs Cooper in memory of her son and daughter who died within three weeks of each other during the War. Mr John Robert Cooper was wounded and died in a military hospital in France in November 1918, and Miss Catherine Mary Cooper succumbed to pneumonia following war work at Luton.

St Peter’s School—The annual Sunday School outing to Wicksteed Park, Kettering, took place on Saturday. A very enjoyable time was spent amongst the varied amusements there, and a good tea was partaken of. The scholars and friends were conveyed by motor coach. The Rev. and Mrs. T. Crowther Green were present with Mr. J. McCartney and Mr. H. Gadsden (wardens). Mrs. Mills, superintendent, made the admirable arrangements.

Whist—A whist drive was held at College House on Saturday, by kind permission of Mr. and Mrs. Bletsoe, in aid of the Church funds. There was a good attendance, and the prizewinners were Mrs. D. Lines, Mr. B. Matthews and Mrs. Eaton. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs. B. Matthews and Miss Frost. Mrs. William Holt, senr., won a cockerel given by Mrs. J. G. Harris. As a result of this effort £6 10s. was realised.

St. Peter's Church—On Whit Sunday the two services were conducted by the Rector, the Rev. W. B. Taylor.
Empire Day - Owing to the Whitsun-tide holiday, Empire Day was celebrated at the Day School on Friday last. National songs were sung, including "Land of Hope and Glory," and also the hymn, "O God, our help in ages past." The scholars then marched into the playground, saluted the flag, and sang one verse of the National Anthem. The Rector, the Rev. W. B. Taylor, was present, and also Mr. and Mrs. J. McCartney.

Added to Newton
"Rushden Argus" recorded: "We learn that the Ecclesiastical Commissioner has recommended the division of Chelveston-cum-Caldecott from Higham Ferrers and the Court Estate from the parish of Rushden. The two separated areas will be added to Newton Bromshold."
