Lieut. Percy Hawkins

Rushden Echo, 1st March 1918, transcribed by Kay Collins

Lieut. Percy Hawkins, Royal Field Artillery, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hawkins, of “Chesterfield,” Rushden Court Estate, who enlisted about four days after war broke out, has seen much service in Egypt, Salonika, Serbia, in the Desert, and in France, is just recovering from an attack of rheumatic fever, and is at present at Woolwich. He is soon about to rejoin his regiment.

The son of George and Sarah Jane Hawkins, Percy was born in 1886 at Wellingborough. His father was born at Doddington, and his mother at Earls Barton, and they married in 1883. George was a boot manufacturer with a factory at Wellingborough, where Percy worked with his father before enlistment. In 1917 the family moved to live at "Chesterfield" and George bought another bungalow which he turned into a Mission Hall.
