ATTEMPTED SUICIDE—The news that a woman named Louisa Shortland, the wife of Charles Shortland, had attempted to commit suicide created some little excitement in the hamlet of Caldecot on Saturday morning last. It appears from inquiry that the poor woman has been suffering from mental depression from some cause or other, most probably an affection of the brain. It is said that she got up on Saturday morning as usual, but not being seen by the neighbours some of them went into the house at nine o'clock. Not finding her there they went upstairs. There they found that the poor woman had not only cut her throat; but that she was in the very act of trying to strangle herself by pulling a handkerchief tightly round her throat, being already black in the face. She was prevented from doing herself any further injury, and Dr. Crew, of Higham Ferrers, was sent for at once. On the surgeon's arrival the wound in the throat, which was pronounced not to be of a very dangerous character, was immediately attended to, and she was put under proper care and treatment. Though the poor woman was in a precarious condition, hopes are now entertained of her ultimate recovery.
