Chelveston School Report 1904

Chelveston School

Mixed School. The school room is not as clean as it might be and the floor should be washed more frequently. There is also a general want of neatness and tidiness and the importance of these qualities can best be inculcated by the force of example. The work, which was in a backward state is improving in mechanical accuracy and the teacher is working hard but the intelligence of the children is still low. The Time Table might be re-arranged with advantage both here and in the Infants’ Room where no lesson should exceed 30 minutes. The walls and ceiling need repairing in several places and the walls should be re-coloured. The windows should be made to open at the top and inlets for fresh air by means of hoppered windows are required. Open ventilation is needed in both rooms. The stoves, as at present arranged, are contrary to the Building Regulations, they should be moved nearer the chimneys into which the pipe should go direct. One stove is badly worn. The trees in the playground should be cut so as not to obscure the light Infants’ Class. The infants are fairly taught. No lesson should exceed 20 minutes.

H. M. Inspector is unable to recommend the payment of grant under Article 105 of the Code of 1900 (Article 32 of the Code of 1904).
