CHELVESTON - THE FEAST—This annual village holiday commenced on Sunday last, and a large number of people flocked into the village in the evening, some perambulating the streets, some visiting the village inn, while others wended their way to the Parish Church, where a special Sunday School anniversary service was announced to be held. Here a large number of people were congregated, and before the service was commenced the church was crowded in every part. The prayers were read by the Rev. E. Termpleman, the lessons being read by the Rev. F. H. Bolinbroke, vicar of Melchbourne. The anthem was taken from the 122nd Psalm, 7th and 8th verses, "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem," and was nicely rendered by the choir. The hymn before the sermon was, "We love the place, oh Lord." The sermon was preached by the Rev. P. H. Bolinbroke, from the words, "That the soul be without knowledge, it is not good," Prov., 19th chapter, 2nd verse. After referring to the establishment of Sunday Schools by Robert Raikes, the aim of the discourse was to show the importance of gaining knowledge, which he said was of two kinds, secular and religious. But secular knowledge without a knowledge of religion would not satisfy the soul of man, and was no good, "for what would it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?" Speaking of Sunday Schools, he urged the parents to take their share of teaching religious truth to their children, and not to leave it all to the clergyman and Sunday school teachers. A collection was made after the sermon while the hymn, "Holy offerings" was being sung, and the service closed with the benediction.
