COMING OF AGE—On the occasion of the coming of age of Wise, of Waltom Hall, Burton-on-Trent, and now of New College, Oxford, who is heir to extensive estates in this district, festivities were held at this village on Tuesday and Wednesday last. The Northamptonshire tenants had subscribed for and obtained a splendid silver bowl to by presented to the heir on this auspicious occasion, and this was presented to him at a dinner of the tenantry on Tuesday, at the Star and Garter Inn. The repast was served by Mr. Bonfield, the host, the expense being borne by Mrs. Wise.
At the conclusion of the meal the usual loyal toasts were given, and Mr. Browning, whose family have lived on the estate for upwards of 50 years, made the presentation, which bore the family arms on one side and an inscription on the other. Twenty-one sat down, there being present Mrs. Wise and Miss Wise, and the heir in whose honour the feast was held, and the Revs. J. Dun and P. E. Wrench.
On Wednesday invitations were issued to two persons in every house in the village to an excellent tea in the schoolroom, and nearly 200 sat down. The meal was provided by Mr. Hancock, of the Coffee Tavern, Higham Ferrers, and was followed by a free entertainment, at which music was contributed by Mr. Brazier, Miss Dun, and others, and Mr. A. Ashby, of Rushden, performed some clever sleight-of-hand tricks.
