Chelveston, which once echoed to the sound of Flying Fortresses, will be turning back the clock to entertain the airmen.

The event is to be held on Sunday, September 20, to mark the return of 305th Bomb Group USAAF personnel.

One of the organisers, Tony Weaver, of Chelveston, said an action packed day had been arranged.

He said: "The event is for personnel who flew missions in B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft during the Second World War.

"There will be military vehicle displays, a parade, a flypast and acrobatic display of Second World War aircraft.

"These will include Stearman and AT-6 Texan trainers. There will also be a wartime display in the village hall and various trade stands."

Anyone with memorabilia of the period should contact Mr Weaver. He is also looking for a band able to play 40s-style swing music for the event.

After a church service the American airmen will be driven in old military vehicles to the Star and Garter pub in the village where a fete will be staged.

But the field at the back of a pub is too small to use for a helicopter and hot air balloon, so organisers are hoping a local landowner will offer the use of a field.

Proceeds will go to the Chelveston church restoration fund. The church contains a memorial to Americans who died while serving during the war.
